The Statue of Liberty is a colossus standing in New York Harbor, and its enormous size is rivaled only by what it means to many. Few, however, know that the face of the statue was modeled after a living, breathing lady whose story is quite enticing.
Isabella Boyer born in Paris in the mid-1800s, to an African pastry chef and English mother, she was of mixed race and considered one of the most beautiful women in the world then.
At 20, she married the sewing machine magnate Isaac Singer, who was much older. Shortly after the wedding, Isaac died in an accident. Though this was a misfortune, it was eventually what caused Isabella to rise to great riches and influence.
She inherited millions upon Isaac's death and became one of the wealthiest women in America. It was then that the famous French sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi met Isabella. Having seen her majesty of beauty and told through her remarkable life struggle, he decided to model Lady Liberty's face after Isabella.
After That Isabella married twice, becoming a noted socialite in the United States and Europe. She mixed with the famous and powerful, always remaining linked to the iconic American symbol that bears her likeness.
By the time of Isabella's death in Paris in 1904, at age 62, the statue she bequeathed to the world with the Statue of Liberty was still there for every arriving visitor to the United States, standing for freedom and chance—the very things that brought Isabella to America in the first place.
So the next time that anyone sees the Statue of Liberty, it will remember what had transpired with the face belonging to that ordinary woman now plastered on one of the globe's most recognizable landmarks. And indeed it is a story that adds further depth and meaning to this dear symbol of the American dream.
